SK: Hello, world! The sun shines brightly on you! Today is September 4, 2008 at SJP (Suzie Jay Podcast). Today we’re going to meet the “Father of Modern Observational Astronomy,” the “Father of Modern Physics”, and the “Father of Modern Science”! The ghost… OF GALILEO GALILEI (Dramatic music)(Clap)
GG: OOOoooooh! I’m here to haunt your soulllllssss!!! * ahem* I mean… Hello everyone! Yes I am Galileo Galilei, the father of modern observational astronomy, modern physics, and modern science in the flesh!
S.K.: Wow! Everyone let’s give another round of applause for Mr. Galilei! (Claps) It is a great honor talking to the FATHER of science, Galileo Galilei! We have many, many questions to ask him. So, let’s start with the interview! Are you ready???
GG: Yes, I AM~~!
SK: Okay then,, First of all, Mr. Galilei, why do you think you are called as the Father of Modern Science??
GG: Well, I guess I am called with such name because I was the first one, the first scientist to actually prove to the public widely about the “sun-centered”, or so called, “heliocentric theory.
SK: Heliocentric theory? What can that be?
GG: It is an idea that the sun is in the center of the universe, not the Earth.
SK: Wait, wait. People in the 17th century thought that EARTH was in the center of the universe?
GG: Well, before the 17th century, people generally believed that Earth was at the center of the universe.
S.K.: Why would they think that way?
GG: Oh, I guess I forgot to explain about that. You see, during that time Christianity was the religion that ruled the world. Everyone believed in God, and God’s power. During the 17th centuries, they had a traditional view that God had placed Earth in the middle of the universe for His people. This is adopted from the ideas of Ptolemy. People thought that other planets would orbit around the Earth.
SK: Wow, that’s quite a stupid philosophy to believe in.
GG: Yes! But I was not afraid to challenge those existing beliefs, even when I knew torture would follow from the Catholic Church! Look at these scars!
SK: (gasp) What did they do to you??!!
GG: They tortured me severely,,,, (sigh) forcing me to say that my idea was a lie. They did not want the public to think that Christian beliefs were false. However, I couldn’t to such thing! I could not let myself throw away my own philosophy, that was based on my observations for years and years.
SK: You were very brave, Mr. Gallileo. (pat pat)
GG: (sniff) But I am glad that now everyone believes in the “helio centric” idea. No one thinks that I am liar anymore.
SK: Of course. Now, can you explain us when the people started to believe that the SUN was actually in the center of the universe?
GG: I was getting to that. A man named Copernicus proposed his Sun- centered system, which I also believed was correct. I used his telescope and I gathered enough evidence to support the Copernican theory.
SK: Wait, I thought that you said YOU were the first one to discover the helio centric theory?
GG: Well,,,,,, I never said that I was the FIRST to discover it… I said I was the FIRST to widely announce it to the public. (hahaha)
SK: Bu… But…
GG: Anyways! With his telescope, I found that the Sun and the moon had visible imperfections such as sunspots and craters. This was very unlikely because people of my time thought that the planets were perfect in every way, which was also based on Christianity. Later, I found that Jupiter had satellites orbiting around it, and Venus was orbiting the Sun instead of it orbiting earth. With such observations, I concluded that Earth was orbiting around the Sun, instead of the Sun orbiting around the Earth.
SK: Oh, so that’s how you found the helio centric theory was correct!
GG: Yes. (smirk) It was my bravery to over challenge existing theories that made me known for my works. Until then, no one dared to have curiosity over the Christianity.
SK: Ahhhh.
GG: Because of me, the Scientific Revolution was able to start in a more rapid speed.
SK: What is the Scientific Revolution?
GG: The Scientific Revolution is a time when people started to question beliefs that were known to be true. My helio centric theory is one example.
SK: Well, now we can see that Mr. Galileo was a very brave man, and how is is fit to be called the “Father of Modern Observational Astronomy”, “Father of Modern Science”, AND the “Father of Modern Philosophy”.
GG: Thanks for the comments.
SK: Everyone, it is time to say good-bye to Mr. Galileo and today’s JSP.
GG: ByeBye!!!
SK: We’ll meet you again at FM. 125 tommorow 2 am. This was Suzie Kim from Suzie Jae Podcast.
